The Civil Rights Era was a time in which Christenberry began formulating artistic themes that would last the rest of his life. His encounter with the KKK that shook Christenberry greatly, the economic disparity that was found in the South, and events such as the Civil Rights Movement and JFK's assassination all were part of the background that Christenberry was relating to within his art.
