The Carved Line is about printmaking and printmakers in New Mexico over a significant period of time from 1890 to present. It features block prints, including new works, by New Mexico's best known printmakers and brings to the forefront little-known artists deserving wide recognition and a place in New Mexico's art historical canon.

Love, pain, and death; passion, loneliness, and sorrow - the entire oeuvre of Edvard Munch (1863-1944) revolves around the fundamental experiences of human existence. Munch is regarded as one of the trailblazers of the Expressionist currents that informed European painting in the early twentieth century. His prints were not byproducts but a central element of his oeuvre, from the first etchings in 1894 to the lithographs he made just before his death.

This is the first comprehensive survey of Vallotton's career to be held in the UK. Through more than 80 paintings and prints, we explore an extraordinary body of work: from compelling portraits, magnetic still-lifes, luminescent landscapes and bitingly satirical prints, to interior scenes which reverberate with psychological tension.

Funny Bones tells the story of how the amusing calaveras--skeletons performing various everyday or festive activities--came to be. They are the creation of Mexican artist José Guadalupe (Lupe) Posada (1852-1913). In a country that was not known for freedom of speech, he first drew political cartoons, much to the amusement of the local population but not the politicians. He continued to draw cartoons throughout much of his life, but he is best known today for his calavera drawings.

Hercules Segers (1589/90-1633/40) was an artist, like Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn, who wanted to fathom and reproduce the essence of nature and the world. There is no evidence that Segers ever travelled or saw mountains in real life. His strange and wonderful mountain landscapes and endless vistas bear witness to an unbounded imagination. Segers was a truly pioneering etcher, developing wholly individual, arcane techniques for his colourful etchings.
